Artist: Henry Stratton Bush

March 2010

The present three watercolour drawings of Trinidad date from 1857 and 1858.
The artist, Henry Stratton Bush, clearly worked with Michel Jean Cazabon in Trinidad in 1857 - their renderings of "Maracas Waterfall" are almost identical, particularly the perspective from which they are painted.
It was not at all unusual for military personnel posted in the colonies to be proficient in watercolour drawing. In the absence of the "Kodak camera" the persons stationed abroad used to make drawings to take home with them to be able to show their families and friends where they had been.
The present three, however, are exceptional in their quality. We have seen many works completed by military personnel posted here - but these three are by far the highest quality -the Maracas Waterfall drawing as good as any Cazabon painting.
